7 Highly Watchable films of Vijayakanth

We thought of picking some really good films of this forgotten Superstar 'Captain' Vijaykanth, who is now often trolled for his fondness for alcohol and poking fun at his political naiveté. He was once a star and capable actor known for his powerful dialogue delivery in Tamil cinema.

1. Sathriyan(1990)

This cult film of the 1990's written and produced by Mani Ratnam is about an honest cop and a corrupt politician. This can be easily termed as Vijaykanth's best attempt at the cop role amongst the innumerable times he donned the Khakhi. The antagonist role played by Malayalam actor Thilakan is quite raw and powerful that makes this film stand the test of time. This is undoubtedly Vijaykanth's best film and also comes in the list of the good cop films made in Tamil cinema .

The 100th film of Vijaykanth and after which he is often referred to as 'Captain' (though the title of the film is based on late LTTE leader Captain Velupillai Prabhakaran) is based on forest brigade Veerappan . This is Vijaykanth's commercial best and was a trendsetter in the 90s era.

3. Ramanaa(2002)

Ramanna is based on the socially relevant plot of corruption that has been dealt umpteen number of times in Tamil cinema( though all the problems still exist). Vijaykanth’s powerful dialogue delivery and his flawless statistics make this performance stand out. This film was Vijaykanth's last sensible film before he set on a rampage to deliver duds and bid adieu to films in order to join politics. This A.R.Murugadoss film is being remade in Hindi as Gabbar after 13 years and set for release in 2015.

4. Chinna Gounder (1992)

This 1992 film directed by R. V. Udayakumar which is famous for the scene involving 'Captain' Vijaykanth spinning a top on Sukanya's naval , had a solid story line and screenplay which is the reason why it features in our list and not for that famous scene. This film was radically different from Vijaykanth's earlier portrayals as he was donning the role of a soft spoken village chieftain. The film is remembered for Vijaykanth's underplay .
